Maroon Mirage - abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Maroon Mirage

80 x 180 cm | acrylic on linen

Mirage

Maroon Mirage is a vertical abstract painting measuring 80 × 180 cm that combines strength and warmth. This is not a work that quietly disappears into a room – its scale and deep colour palette give it a strong presence. And yet, in its own way, it still brings calmness. Within the Mirage series, I intentionally introduced a more purple-toned undertone in certain areas of the painting. This creates a subtle connection to another series created during the same period: Bordeaux. The work is built up through multiple layers of burgundy and deep red tones, combined with warm metallic accents. I work with different types of acrylic paint, often self-mixed and developed from my own pigment selections. It is exactly within this search for contrast and balance that the nuances emerge that give the work its depth. Not everything is meant to feel sleek or perfect – that is precisely what gives the painting character and keeps it alive. The painting is stretched on a 4.5 cm deep aluminium frame and can be hung without an external frame. The sides are fully painted, allowing the image to continue seamlessly around the edges.
Layers of Connection - a painting by Marella Hesseling

Layers of Connection

100 x 100 cm | acrylic on linen & 24k gold

PaletteEcho

Layers of Connection is an abstract painting in which layering plays a central role – not only in paint, but also in time and experience. The work was developed over a longer period, from 2024 to 2026, moving through different seasons. That evolution is visible in the composition, the colours and the intensity of the piece. This is one of my most intensive works. A canvas where many things come together: material, movement, but also my personal process. The composition shifts from left to right, almost like thoughts moving through the mind. Not linear, but searching. The work reflects how insights sometimes need time to settle – layer by layer. The paint has been applied thickly and in many layers, giving the surface an almost sculptural quality. The edges are visibly shaped by this process and carry a raw, irregular character. From the side, the texture almost resembles leather – tactile, layered and rich in detail. Between the layers, 24k gold leaf appears and disappears throughout the painting. In some places it remains visible, while in others it is hidden beneath newer layers. That tension keeps the work alive and continuously draws the eye across the surface. The colours bring together shades and tones that have appeared throughout my work over the years. In that sense, the painting also feels like a meeting point of earlier collections, directions and experiments. Layers of Connection asks for attention, but also gives a great deal back. It is a work that continues to reveal something new over time. The painting is framed in a black wooden floater frame with an exceptionally slim profile. The clean frame creates a deliberate contrast with the heavy textures and layered surface of the work, which continues around the sides.
Garnet Mirage - artwork by Marella Hesseling

Garnet Mirage

80 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

Mirage

Garnet Mirage is a powerful piece within my Mirage series. It carries the same warm color palette that defines the collection, yet in this painting I have reduced the blue and green accents to a minimum. This shifts the focus entirely to the depth of red – from crimson and ruby to darker, almost mineral tones – combined with subtle copper gold that gently catches the light. With this work, I consciously chose a different direction. The paint is applied more thickly, with stronger relief and a more pronounced texture than in the other pieces of the series. This layering creates an enhanced sense of depth. The surface responds vividly to changing light temperatures throughout the day – cooler in the morning, warmer in the evening – allowing the painting to continuously transform. The texture surprises, precisely because the light moves across it in new ways each time. The combination of copper gold with crimson, ruby and other rich red tones makes this piece distinctly warm. Intense, yet balanced. If you are interested in Garnet Mirage, feel free to get in touch. I will gladly share more information about pricing and availability. The painting can be viewed by appointment in my studio in Vleuten, near Utrecht.
Fronsac - abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Fronsac

100 x 150 cm | acrylic on linen

Bordeaux

Fronsac is an abstract painting from the Bordeaux series, inspired by the layered character of the wine region it is named after. The work carries a fresh tension: between structure and movement, between control and letting go. The foundation consists of layers of different metallic pigments. On top of these, rich burgundy and deep red tones are built up, combined with accents of oxidized green and golden green. These shades give the painting a vibrant, almost youthful energy – like a young wine still developing over time. The contrast between warm richness and rougher, unexpected nuances creates a dynamic composition. Fronsac was created from the idea of building a space where calmness and allure come together, without everything needing to feel perfect. It is precisely the edge of imperfection that gives the work character and openness. A counterbalance to overly polished interiors – a work that dares to breathe. Fronsac reflects the tension between control and release. Between logic and warmth. It is exactly within that contrast that the most interesting image emerges for me. The painting is framed in dark wood with a subtle wine-red glow, deepening the palette and quietly bringing the entire piece together.
Tenno - Abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Tenno

80 x 180 cm | acrylic on linen

Grounded

Tenno is an abstract painting inspired by autumn around Lago di Tenno in Northern Italy. The work connects to earlier paintings inspired by Italian landscapes, such as the Val d’Orcia series, but this time the focus shifts more towards the mountains and the water. Different shades of gold are woven into the underlying layers, referring to autumn leaves, warm sunlight across the landscape and the reflection of the autumn sun on the lake. In contrast, blue-green accents represent the water, adding freshness and depth to the painting. Because of the many layers, textures and colour contrasts, new details continue to appear. It is a work that invites you to stand still for a moment – or sit with it for a while – as your eye keeps moving through the textures, colours and details. With its size of 80 × 180 cm, Tenno works beautifully on a narrower wall or dividing wall, for example between a living room and kitchen, where it can connect the space without overpowering it. Curious to see how Tenno looks in real life? You are welcome to visit one of the upcoming exhibitions or make an appointment at the studio. Feel free to get in touch for more information or to discuss pricing.
Gold & Pepper Dyptich - Artwork by Marella Hesseling

Gold & Pepper III & IV - Dyptich

100 x 120 cm (x2) | acrylic on linen

Gold & Pepper

Gold & Pepper III and IV form a powerful duo, yet each piece also makes a statement on its own. The artworks play with contrast: a solid, dark foundation set against warm shades of champagne gold. The use of metal leaf adds a subtle, luxurious shimmer that shifts with the light, giving the work a different appearance throughout the day. Both paintings can be hung in various orientations – horizontally, vertically, or as a mirrored diptych – allowing them to effortlessly adapt to any space. Stretched on a sturdy 4.5 cm aluminum frame, with painted edges, ready to hang. Interested in one of the pieces or the diptych? Feel free to get in touch for more information, to discuss the price or to schedule a viewing at the studio.
Lussac - a painting by Marella Hesseling

Lussac

100 x 150 cm | acrylic on linen

Bordeaux

Lussac is an abstract painting that carries both calmness and richness, built up in layers that slowly reveal their depth. Like a more mature wine, the work develops through nuance – restrained, yet full of character. The underlying layers of dark bronze, champagne gold and rose gold create a warm foundation that softly reflects the light. The build-up of burgundy and red tones is fuller and deeper than in Fronsac. Here, a certain calmness and balance take over, allowing the colours to blend more seamlessly into one another. The contrast lies less in colour itself, and more in the layering of textures and structures. Warm richness is interrupted by soft, irregular traces, keeping the work alive without becoming restless. Lussac is about the balance between perfection and imperfection. About allowing a touch of rawness within a refined whole. The work offers a counterbalance to the need for everything to feel sleek and controlled, bringing warmth and depth back into the space. The painting is framed in dark wood with a subtle wine-red glow, deepening the palette and quietly tying the work together.
Sanguine - a painting by Marella Hesseling

Sanguine

120 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

PaletteEcho

Sanguine is an abstract painting of 120 × 120 cm in which colour takes the leading role. The work feels energetic, expressive and warm at the same time. In the underpainting, I visualised the brain’s tendency to think in boxes and categories – something you discover when viewing the work from different angles. A structured and recognisable foundation. The layers above it create the opposite movement: freer, looser and filled with colour. A kind of release, without completely abandoning what came before. That balance is important to me. Structure gives direction, but it is the space beyond it that creates movement and growth. I translated that tension onto the canvas, partly through the use of rose gold metal leaf. It adds warmth and catches the light in a subtle way. The painting is built up from rich reds and rose tones, combined with different acrylic paints and custom pigment mixtures. Because of these many layers, new details continue to appear – some immediately visible, others only emerging as the light changes. Sanguine moves between structure and freedom, between thinking and feeling. A work that has presence, yet can also become quiet when the light softens and the metal leaf reflects a warm glow. The painting is stretched on a 4.5 cm deep aluminium frame and can be displayed without an external frame. The edges are fully painted, allowing the image to continue around the sides.
Red City - artwork by Marella Hesseling

Red City

120 x 180 cm | acrylic on linen

Grounded

Red City is an abstract painting from the Grounded series, inspired by the warm earthy tones and rich colour contrasts of Marrakech and the surrounding desert. Ochre, burnt browns and golden yellows form the base, combined with touches of soft green and layered purples – colours that echo textiles, spices and market scenes. The surface is built up with layers of champagne gold, bronze and rose gold. These subtle metallic accents catch the light and shift throughout the day, creating a quiet sense of movement. The balance between matte and reflective areas adds depth and refinement. Although I haven’t visited this place yet, the work is shaped through imagination. It’s a landscape that develops layer by layer – a journey I’ve already started in my mind. The painting is stretched on a 4.5 cm deep aluminium frame. The sides are fully painted, allowing the piece to be hung without a frame. Interested in Red City? Feel free to get in touch for pricing or to schedule a studio visit. If you like this style but are looking for a different size or colour palette, I also create commissioned pieces.
Fall d'Orcia III | Abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Fall d'Orcia III

120 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

Grounded

Those familiar with the earlier works in the Grounded series will immediately recognize the warm color palette in Fall d’Orcia III. The works are inspired by the feeling of a Tuscan autumn, specifically in Val d’Orcia. At the same time, this piece has its own structure and character. Warm earthy tones are combined with deep greens and touches of blue, creating contrast and depth. If you’ve ever visited Val d’Orcia, you might recognize that autumn feeling in this work. In this painting, I deliberately built up more layers. The combination of different textures and structures keeps the work engaging to look at – both up close and from a distance. Here too, I have subtly used metallic paint in tones such as bronze, champagne, and dark gold. These details are not immediately visible, but come to life when the light hits the surface. Stretched on a thick aluminum frame, with painted edges and ready to hang. Interested in Fall d’Orcia III? Feel free to call, email, or message me for more information, pricing, or to discuss delivery and installation options.
Alpe d’Lux - abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Alpe d'Lux

120 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

Grounded

Alpe d’Lux brings together two worlds: the desire for luxury and a deep connection to nature. Fresh greens and blues evoke alpine lakes, crisp air, and clear mountain light. Earthy tones like sand, clay, and soft greys form the base — a grounded foundation for the whole piece. In the deeper layers, you’ll find subtle metallic accents in champagne, bronze, and gold. They’re not dominant, but reveal themselves when the light hits just right — like those quiet, beautiful moments in everyday life. A layered, serene piece with a gentle glow. Stretched on a solid 4.5 cm deep aluminium frame, with fully painted edges — ready to hang, no frame needed. Do you want to see it in real life or more (price) info? Feel free to send me a message!

Connection - artwork by Marella Hesseling

Connection

160 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen | 24 k gold leaf

Gold & Pepper

Connection is about connection and the story that lies beneath the surface. Soft tones like cream, taupe, white, and grey form the foundation, complemented by bold black accents. A line of 24-carat gold leaf ties everything together — sometimes clearly visible, sometimes hidden beneath layers of paint. And that’s exactly the strength of this piece: not everything reveals itself at first glance. The real value lies in the layers, in what you discover when you take the time to look closer. Just like in life, it’s the experiences and stories beneath the surface that make it truly rich and meaningful. Connection is painted on strong Belgian linen, stretched over an aluminum frame, and measures 120 × 160 cm. Ready to bring a sense of calm, depth, and understated luxury to any space. Interested? Haute Mirage

60 x 80 cm | acrylic on cotton

Between them, unexpected touches of blue appear — a fresh contrast that brings balance and depth. Abstract painting by Marella Hesseling

Forest Cascade

190 x 100 cm | acrylic on linen

Grounded

Forest Cascade is an abstract painting measuring 190 × 100 cm, created as a commissioned work in which trust and creative freedom played a central role. Through conversations with the client, it became clear that she values luxury and refined materials, while also feeling deeply connected to nature. Bringing these elements together formed the starting point of this piece. During the painting process, a photograph from one of her travels provided direction. Not as a literal reference, but as a feeling — movement, layering and the presence of a forest with flowing water. These impressions guided the composition and rhythm of the work. The painting is built up from multiple layers and materials, including various types of paint, metallic bronze and champagne gold accents, custom-mixed colours and oil sticks. This results in a rich surface with many details, inviting the viewer to keep looking and discovering new nuances. For me as a maker, this is a work in which I was able to put a lot of myself — time, attention and focus. If you are looking for a painting in my style that truly fits you and your space, I would be happy to explore the possibilities together. Feel free to get in touch.

Ruby Mirage II

120 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

Mirage

Ruby Mirage II is a commissioned painting, created from a shared connection with the Mirage series. The warmth and layered character of Ruby Mirage formed the starting point, with the wish to create the work in a size that would better suit the clients’ dining room. During The Art Experience, they viewed my work in person. Seeing the layers, details, and the way light moves across the surface gave a clear sense of direction. Ruby Mirage in 100 × 100 cm felt conceptually just right. Based on interior photos, we then chose a larger format of 120 × 120 cm together. Throughout the painting process, I shared images along the way so the clients could follow the development of the work. At the live review moment, everything felt complete. The same sense of alignment was there during delivery and installation. The painting was given a prominent place in the dining room, where the light naturally enhances the warm tones and subtle accents. Are you drawn to this work but looking for a painting in a different size or color palette? I’d be happy to think along with you about a commissioned piece tailored to your space and wishes.

With earthy greens, deep blacks, and natural textures, this work reflects the constant interplay between a busy mind and moments of clarity. Sometimes, a walk in the forest is enough to bring some order to the thoughts that are running wild. This contrast — structured versus chaotic — is not a conflict but a coexistence. Both sides are equally valuable, simply different. Accents of 23-karat gold leaf highlight the beauty found in both order and mess, giving the work a refined and layered finish. Sienna City

120 x 120 cm | acrylic on linen

Places to Go

Sienna City is an abstract painting created on commission, inspired by the work Spring and the City. The clients were drawn to specific elements of that piece, but wished to bring the warmth of burnt sienna more clearly to the forefront. The painting was also allowed to be more expressive in presence. Using interior photographs and colour samples from the space, a new palette took shape. Warm layers of sienna form the foundation, enriched with refined details in bronze and champagne gold. These metallic accents catch the light subtly, adding depth and nuance while maintaining a sense of calm. Because the painting was to be hung higher than usual – due to the presence of four-legged companions in the home – special attention was given to the lower edge of the work. The composition is balanced and considered from every angle. Throughout the process, the clients were closely involved. A viewing moment was planned, followed by a few small adjustments. The final installation felt like a celebration, as everything came together naturally – colour, space and intention. The work found its place beautifully. Curious about what a commissioned artwork could bring to your interior? Feel free to get in touch to explore the possibilities.

Blushing Mirage is an abstract painting of 60x80 cm, constructed with earthy pink tones, warm copper gold colors and subtle metallic accents. It captures the glow of a sunset with dark details for depth and metallic highlights that invite you to get closer. The black wooden frame subtly frames the whole and enhances the intensity of the colours. Blushing Mirage is available immediately. Interest?
