about.
Marella Hesseling
Marella Hesseling creates abstract paintings in which layering, contrast and nuance play a central role. Her work emerges from a combination of intuition, observation and experimentation. She finds inspiration in travel, nature, encounters and conversations that leave a lasting impression. Her paintings do not reveal everything at first glance, but invite viewers to keep looking and discovering.
Through carefully built layers of paint, texture, subtle metallic accents and occasionally gold leaf, her work explores the balance between calmness and movement, structure and freedom. Some paintings develop entirely intuitively, while others originate from a concept or underlying idea. Themes such as order and chaos, control and spontaneity, and the way people perceive themselves and one another regularly find their way into her work.
Marella often mixes her own paints and pigments, continually experimenting with materials, colours and finishes. By combining matte surfaces with gloss and metallic reflections, she creates depth that changes with the light and reveals new details over time.
Beyond creating art, Marella actively seeks connection with others. As a conceptual thinker, she draws energy from conversations, collaborations and new ideas. Working with collectors, interior professionals, designers and fellow creatives often leads to unexpected insights and new applications. Driven by this curiosity, she creates both independent collections and commissioned works, always with attention to the space and the people for whom the artwork is intended.

“My paintings are not just meant to be beautiful. They should grab your attention, intrigue you, and reveal something new every time you look at them.”
