Tidal Passage

At the edge of the Westerschelde, the water flows inward with every change of tide. Sandbanks appear at low tide, disappear at high tide, and return again. That rhythm lies at the heart of Tidal Passage, created for clients whose apartment looks out over that very water. The commission began with a video call. Alongside their love for the location, I also heard about their shared passion for travel: leaving, discovering, and always coming home again. While designing the composition, I explored the surroundings further, down to a satellite image. The movement from right to left and back again is visible not only in the water, but in the rhythm of the painting itself. The colour palette builds on an earlier work, Forest Cascade, complemented with nuances of chestnut brown and brass gold. The water is rendered in dark, deep green tones, while the land and sandbanks appear in light, warm brown hues. Together they give the piece the warmth and depth that suits this place. It comes through well in photos, but in person the textures, the layers of paint built up with the palette knife, and above all the metallic accents truly come to life. Brass gold, champagne gold and dark bronze catch the light subtly; at delivery, I saw how the sky outside was reflected in them. Tidal Passage was created for one specific place, with a view of the water. Yet I enjoy making renders of my work in entirely different interiors, to show how the same painting evokes a new experience under different light and in a different setting, while its character remains unchanged.
