Diros I & II

Some places stay with you longer than you'd expect. For me, that was the Diros caves on the Peloponnese in Greece. The limestone formations, the water reflecting the light, and the soft tones of beige, brown and green formed the inspiration for this series. Diros I and Diros II are two abstract paintings, each 100 × 120 cm. They were made independently of one another, but from the start I felt they formed a strong whole together. The compositions complement each other without mirroring one another. Both works are built up from many layers of acrylic paint, applied with brush and palette knife. Metallic paint allows the relief to respond to light differently throughout the day, subtly shifting the character of the paintings depending on where you stand and how daylight enters the room. Together, Diros I and Diros II form a diptych of 200 × 120 cm that brings together calm, warmth and texture. Two works that share the same memory, yet each carry their own character.
