Diros I

Diros I is the first work in the Diros collection, born from my trip to the Peloponnese, where I visited the cave system of the same name. The stalactites, the soft beige tone of the rock, the pale green algae nestled in the damp layers, and the reflection of water on stone — it stayed with me. Back in my studio in Vleuten, I translated that memory onto canvas. And every time I look at it, it takes me straight back to that trip. The painting, 100 × 120 cm, is built up in warm, earthy tones of beige, white, grey, brown and sand. After a first base layer with the brush, I developed the composition further with the palette knife — layer upon layer, until a relief emerged that echoes the structure of dripstone. With metallic paint, I brought back the shimmer of water on stone and algae. As a result, it sometimes looks as if water is still running down the rock. The combination of depth, texture and subtle shine gives Diros I a luxurious quality. Up close especially, you can see just how much is happening within the layers. Diros I is available individually and, together with Diros II, forms a diptych in which the two works strengthen one another. They suit interiors where calm and natural materials come together: a light-filled living room, an entrance with natural stone, or a business space where you want one piece to set the tone.
