Ember Mirage

Ember Mirage began as a bespoke commission, inspired by Crimson Mirage — an earlier piece the clients felt an immediate, strong connection to. Only the size didn't suit their space, and if they had one preference, it was for the darker corners of that piece. So I developed a new painting with the same warmth, layering and rich texture, this time fully tailored to the dimensions of their interior. There was one more clear wish: a black frame. That bold frame gives the piece a contemporary edge and lets the warm earth tones, subtle metallic accents and refined textures stand out even more. Like many paintings, Ember Mirage starts with a first layer laid down with the brush. From that base, I build up layer by layer with the palette knife: some remain visible, others disappear beneath new colours and textures. That process repeats until the right balance emerges — looking back at the process photos, this piece worked out to roughly thirty layers. The unveiling took place in my home studio, where I present new work in a calm, homely setting, so clients can experience the painting the way it will feel in their own interior. It was an instant match: the piece felt right at home from the very first moment and now forms a warm, personal part of the interior. Alongside its place by their dining table, renders of Ember Mirage were also made in other rooms and lighting situations, giving a good sense of how the piece looks in different settings.
